What is Chrome Plating?

Chrome is a naturally occurring element, but is not useful in its raw form. Nothing is ever made out of solid chromium, but it is electroplated onto different metals to provide either a decorative finish or increase the hardness and wear resistance of the base material.

Many people will refer to any shiny metal finish as being chrome, even where the element has not been used, but you can tell a genuine chrome plated piece as the finish will be slightly blue in colour.

There are two main kinds of Chrome Plating Decorative/Bright and Industrial/Hard Chrome.  As the names suggest where an extremely hard and tough industrial coating is needed then Hard Chrome will be required and for parts such as car bumpers where an attractive visual appearance is the requirement then Bright Chrome would be applied.

As our name suggests, Silchrome have extensive experience working with both decorative chrome and hard chrome plating and with in-house polishing can offer a quick turnaround for a quality coating for your component.
